Type

Characteristics/Standards

Long Sleeve Fluid Resistant Gown

Rationale: •

Consider the level of coverage required for clothing/skin when choosing between an apron and a long-sleeve gown. Consider the duration of contact with the client and risk of exposure to blood and body substances. communicable disease and how it is transmitted to a health practitioners skin during contact. Always remove and dispose of used aprons/gowns in the area of client care. Replace gown every four hours (continuous) and always change gown if it becomes contaminated, soiled, damaged, damp, wet, or exposed to aerosols. Always tie gowns at the back to prevent contamination of hands during removal. Clinical and laboratory coats or jackets are not substitutes for aprons and gowns. A mask can be worn for up to four hours (continuous) unless if it becomes contaminated, soiled, damaged, damp, wet, exposed to droplets or if the correct fit is not maintained. Change mask between suspected or confirmed infectious clients, unless the clients are collocated in the same care area. Open all concertinaed sections of the face mask and use both hands to secure the mask over the face. Take the first few moments to adjust the mask (e.g., pinch over the nose, position on the face, pull under the chin) whilst the mask is still clean. Do not leave mask dangling around the neck or off one ear. Never reapply a mask after removing it (including for drinking or eating) and avoid touching the front of the mask while wearing it (perform hand hygiene if this does occur). Consider the type of MRO, transmissible infection or

Gowns protect exposed body areas and prevent contamination of clothing with blood, body substances, and other potentially infectious material. Enhanced precautions Consider for standard, contact, droplet and airborne precautions if an apron provides inadequate cover.

Surgical (fluid resistant) Mask

Rationale: •

Surgical masks are used to keep splashes, splattering or sprays of blood, saliva or body substances from reaching the mouth and nose of the person wearing them. Provide some protection from respiratory secretions, i.e. inhalation of droplets with potential for transmission of droplet pathogens. Consider for standard and contact precautions if risk of spraying, splattering or splashing. Droplet precautions.
