Important Considerations when using PPE
Type
Characteristics/Standards
Consider placing a surgical mask on coughing clients to limit potential dissemination of infectious respiratory secretions from the client to others. Always perform hand hygiene after removing the mask. Follow workplace policy regarding client use of masks. If using a P2/N95 respirator training is required to check mask fit (a fit test is the responsibility of the employer and a fit check is the responsibility of the wearer). Different types/brands of respirators may fit better for particular face shapes. Skin care is important for prolonged respirator use. Those with facial hair must be aware that an adequate seal cannot be guaranteed between the face and P2/ N95 respirator. Replace respirator mask every four hours (continuous) and always change mask if it becomes contaminated, soiled, damaged, damp, wet, exposed to aerosols or if the correct fit is not maintained. Change mask between suspected or confirmed infectious clients, unless the clients are collocated in the same care area. Do not leave mask dangling around the neck. Never reapply a mask after removing it and avoid touching the front of the mask while wearing it. Always perform hand hygiene after removing the mask.
