SPA ONLINE UPDATE
SPA Facebook highlights from December 2013 to January 2014 included...
Congratulations, Dimity!
Ever wondered how Australians’ distinct slang and virtually inimitable accent originated? Dr Tanya Serry’s (speech pathology lecturer at La Trobe University) article, published at thenewdaily.com.au , helps explain our unique linguistic habits. Make sure you check it out, it’s a ripper! (posted January 28) Uniquely Ostrayan
Pioneer, speech pathologist, Nation for Communication Champion, SPA Fellow – and now Officer of the Order of Australia! Dimity Dornan, founder and executive director of the not-for-profit Hear and Say Centre, was awarded this prestigious honour on Australia Day 2014. Dimity founded the organisation in 1992 to help children with hearing impairment to listen and speak. The Brisbane Times article about Dimity’s achievements was shared on our Facebook page on January 27 .
“We do tend to minimise our words and give them diminutive forms. We have brekkie, we go to the footy, we have a cuppa... There’s an Aussie laconic sociocultural sense to the way that Australians use this diminutive form.”
You may have noticed during the lead-up, and for the official launch on February 21, we have been posting many updates about the ICP2014 on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Keep an eye on our social media channels for news about all our ICP2014 activities and ideas for how you can show your support!
