2014 NATIONAL CONFERENCE NEWS

18 – 21 May, 2014 Crown Conference Centre, Melbourne, Australia

Program Update The Conference Planning Committee (CPC) is pleased to advise that the 2014 National Conference – connections: client.clinician.context program has been finalised. This was a particularly challenging process this year given the large number of high quality submissions that were received. Despite the Scientific Program Sub-Committee (SPSC) and CPC trying many and varied program formats, there unfortunately was not enough space to include every submission into the overall program and theme. We acknowledge and thank those for the time and effort taken to submit their abstracts. We are very pleased with the program, and believe there will be an excellent range of high quality presentations under a number of topics that will be of interest to a wide cross section of the profession. Each author who received notification late 2013 that their abstract has been included, were emailed the ‘official’ confirmation in January 2014. If for some reason you have not received this email, please contact the National Conference Manager on conference@ speechpathologyaustralia.org.au .

Conference Program Flyer Included with this issue of Speak Out you will find a copy of the Conference Program Flyer . This is an overview of the sessions that will be presented. With regard to the Conference program, the SPSC and CPC are delighted that the two Conference keynote speakers are each offering a masterclass presentation on the Sunday prior to the pre-registration and welcome reception. Dr Susan Langmore will provide an overview of FEES with regard to the prediction and prevention of aspiration pneumonia in patients with dysphagia. Dr Langmore will outline the best predictors of dysphagia for clients in a variety of settings, discuss why aspiration is not the best predictor of pneumonia, and teach clinicians techniques to minimise the risk of pneumonia for clients. Importantly, clinicians will learn how to develop care plans for individuals with severe dysphagia. This masterclass is of great benefit to clinicians working within the dysphagia area.

Dr Sue Roulstone ’s masterclass focuses on the development of

functional, outcome-based interventions. Dr Roulstone

will explore a variety of models for measuring outcomes, outline how to design and apply outcome-based
