multilingual children Registrations opening soon

Australian speech-language pathologists frequently work with culturally and linguistically diverse children. Unfortunately, many multilingual publications and resources from around the world don’t seem to fit well in an Australian context. The children who come through our doors also have a diverse range of language backgrounds and other risk factors, which make it difficult for us to develop cultural competence and linguistic understanding. Although achieving culturally responsive, valid, and clinically feasible assessment and intervention for this population can be challenging, it is possible. In this two-day workshop, focusing on working with multilingual children (aged 4-12 years) in an Australian context, we will: • outline typical development of speech and language for children learning English as an additional language. • describe differences between monolingual and multilingual speech and language development. • explain assessment options that assist with differentiating speech and language difference from disorder. • explore the clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis process. • review the evidence for multilingual speech and language intervention. • highlight strategies for supporting multilingual students within the classroom setting. • identify important processes for working effectively with interpreters. • provide a framework for managing complex cases where there are risk factors including trauma, social disadvantage, cognitive or hearing impairment.
