Mentor find, redefined

Speech Pathology Australia recently updated its Find a Mentor online search function. The new features make it simpler to identify potential mentors by their experience and skillset. Members can perform a search using parameters such as age of client, area of practice, non- clinical areas, and setting. The Association has also added new, non-clinical search capabilities. Those looking for support in growing their speech pathology practice may find a suitable mentor by selecting Business development . Mentors skilled in Career progression provide guidance and help members chart a course to prepare for new professional roles and responsibilities. The Teaching/Clinical Education/ Clinical Supervision area offers mentoring support to members looking to provide quality clinical teaching and supervision to students and other speech pathologists. Members wishing to upskill or move into the telehealth space may find assistance through the Telepractice search option. Mentoring is not a substitute for clinical supervision. Members looking for support with the scope of practice required by their current work setting should discuss accessibility of supervision with their employer. If an appropriate supervisor is not available within an organisation, the Association’s online supervision register may help members identify an external supervisor. By contrast, mentoring is a collaborative, voluntary partnership in which both parties work to develop new skills, knowledge and attitudes. In addition to the Find a mentor search, Speech Pathology Australia offers a variety of resources to help members initiate and engage in productive mentoring. For more information about participating in mentoring partnerships, please contact Nathan Cornish-Raley at psa@speechpathologyaustralia.org.au. Nathan Cornish-Raley Professional Support Advisor

An estimated 1 in 10 school children suffer from hearing loss, which left undetected can lead to speech, learning and behavioural problems. The Sound Scouts hearing check is a simple way to identify if a child has a hearing issue, including listening difficulties in noise. The test incorporates the science of a hearing test in a fun interactive game. Evidence based, accessible and delivering immediate results, it’s the perfect in-clinic solution. The Sound Scouts App is now free to test all Australian school-aged children. Download it today.
