Building awareness for Book of the Year

south Australia

In celebration of the Book of the Year Awards, Speech Pathology Australia SA Branch held a week-long event in collaboration with the Campbelltown Public Library. This took place during Storytimes between 20th and 26th October. Each day, the librarian read a selection of shortlisted books from the Three to Five Years category, including The Very Sleepy Bear, Boy, No One Likes a Fart, and Why Can’t I Be a Dinosaur . Each session involved singing, dancing, phonological awareness activities and a craft related to The Very Sleepy Bear . Student representatives Sheridan Bartlett, Kate Davis and Julia Montatore played key roles in the organisation and implementation of this event. Speech pathologists and speech pathology student volunteers were present at the event to answer parents questions and promote community awareness of speech pathology, the Book of the Year Awards, and the importance of early literacy development. On average, 25 children and their caregivers attended each day. We received lots of interest from caregivers and this was a wonderful opportunity to engage with the community. Thank you again to all the speech pathologists and speech pathology students who assisted with the event, especially Cathy Clark, Jenny Moody, Jackie Harbison, Michelle Moody, Berni Dahlenburg, Kate Davis, Paula Messina, Chyon Booth, Tiffany Watson, Louisa Neate, Samantha Hosking and Alison Taylor. The SA Branch is excited to continue building relationships with local libraries in order to promote the Book of the Year Awards in 2019! If you are interested in being involved next year, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Julia Montatore at j.montatore@gmail.com to express your interest.
