Speak Out December 2018

Student networking event

Recently the SPA Victorian Student Branch hosted a networking and presentation night at the Australian Catholic University. The event, “SLP2B 2018 – Communication access is communication for all” was an opportunity for 120 speech pathology students from La Trobe University, Australian Catholic University and The University of Melbourne, to network and hear from an accomplished panel of speech pathologists from varied practice areas. In their engaging presentations, the speakers shared professional stories, advice, and inspired an audience of soon-to- be speech pathologists. In addition to our practising clinicians, attendees were also fortunate to hear from a consumer of speech pathology services, Mimi Ermet. Mimi gave an evoking speech about her experiences as a user of speech pathology services after having a stroke which impacted her communication. Her presentation reinforced the important role of speech pathologists. Mimi and her husband, Konrad, also established the advocacy group, Aphasia Victoria, which provides education and links to support those with aphasia. The student representative group would like to thank our panel of speakers: Mimi Ermet, Olga Birchall (Aged care), Sarah Draper (Private Practice and School), Kate Bridgman (Fluency and Telehealth), Laura Caire (Youth Mental Health) and Penny Chapman (Head and Neck Cancer) for giving their time to present at the event. We would also like to thank the student group co-ordinators and congratulate the 2018 SPA Victorian student representatives.
