Mentoring & supervision
The Association’s mentoring program assists members in connecting with experienced speech pathologists who can offer guidance in reaching their professional development goals. Although mentoring is a voluntary and a more collegial form of support than clinical supervision, it should include elements like mutually agreed upon goals, systems of documentation, ongoing communication, and interpersonal accountability. Members can access SPA’s online 'Find a Mentor' search to identify mentors who are available to enter into a formalised partnership focussing on specific clinical or professional areas and longer-term skill development. Because mentoring involves sustained collaboration, participants should reflect on what they would like to achieve before seeking a mentor. The Association offers an online Readiness Quiz Helping members to reach their PD goals
for Mentees, which offers guiding questions around topics like availability, goal setting, feedback, onsite versus remote mentoring, as well as type and frequency of feedback. Likewise, those considering becoming a mentor are encouraged to take the Readiness Quiz for Mentors. The Association benefits from a variety of volunteer mentors who offer their time and skill in supporting the growth of others. Mentors should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience. Qualified members may register as a mentor online. Those seeking more information are invited to contact the Association's Professional Support Advisor by email at psa@speechpathologyaustralia.org.au .
