Today’s workshop aims to provide an update on the following areas: • Overview of current theories of the causes of ASD. • Analysis of the DSM-5 for Autism Spectrum Disorder. • The role of a speech pathologist in the diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder. • Diagnosis of ASD in toddlers. • Outcome predictors in ASD. • Pivotal skills for the acquisition of spoken language in preschoolers with ASD. • Evidence based approaches for improving early communication in very young children with ASD. • Strategies for increasing preverbal and early verbal communication in children with ASD including a review of Rapid Motor Imitation Antecedent Training and AAC approaches.

Working with people with disability This course aims to prepare you to work with people with a disability, including those with complex communication needs - as colleagues and as clients. It provides information on understanding cerebral palsy, best practise frameworks in supporting individuals with complex communication needs; and frameworks and practical demonstration of engagement and collaboration with clients and families.
