The Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZ ISO 31000:2009) 14 has developed a stepwise approach to risk management (see Figure 10). The areas of consideration include:

• Establishing context  basic parameters to manage risk • Avoiding risk  establishing if a risk is present and if the potential risk can be prevented • Identifying risks  comprehensive and systematic process to identify all potential risk • Analysing risks  source, consequences, occurrence and associated factors of risk • Evaluating risks  compare the level of risk with previously established risk and identify possible options and impacts • Treating Risks  management options for identified risk • Communication and consultation  key to ensuring increased awareness of what the risks are and how to manage or prevent risks • Monitoring and review  identify new risks, analyse current risk and effectiveness of management.
