Advertising and SPA’s Code of Ethics – a summary

To meet the standards stipulated in SPA’s Code of Ethics (2010) your advertising must:

• be truthful

• be accurate

• be based on evidence

• not misrepresent the profession

• contain the accurate wording and/or post-nominal for your SPA membership and CPSP status (where applicable)

• contain the approved SPA Member logo (which the member has obtained from SPA) (where applicable)

• contain the accurate post-nominals and use the accepted style by the university from which you gained your qualification (where applicable)

• not contain the term ‘expert’ or ‘specialist’

• not contain testimonials

• not offer inducements without fully explaining the terms and conditions of the promotion

SPA members who employ speech pathology staff must ensure that they are not prevented from complying with their obligations. SPA members who employ someone (e.g., a marketer or other staff member) to write advertising materials must accept full responsibility for the advertising materials and ensure that they vet and approve the advertising prior to publication.
