SA celebrates Speech Pathology Week

South Australia

Here in South Australia we had a wonderful time celebrating Speech Pathology Week, this year with a focus on using social media to spread the word. Branch Chair Andrea Ferguson was hot on Twitter and Instagram and you can check out her posts @ashlyferg. Aside from social media, there were also some great opportunities to put the word out to the broader community. Some of the highlights of the week included: A video produced by UniSA which was shared by staff and students, www.youtube.com/watc h?v=3TfYyfhWbMc&feature=youtu.be Student speech pathologists on placement at Elizabeth Vale Primary School, Amelia and Sophie, under the supervision of school based senior speech pathologist Sue McCandlish celebrated with a display, wrapped chocolates and a quiz with prizes; they posted about the event on Instagram to be in the running for the social media competition run by the Association, (See photo) Widespread use of the Speech Pathology Week logo and other aspects of the digital media pack by those working in both private and public settings including involving our littlest communicators using the colouring pages, and An article published in The Advertiser highlighting the new speech pathology course at UniSA. (See photo) Just prior to the kick off of Speech Pathology Week, members of the SA Branch Executive, Branch Chair Andrea Ferguson and Sue Horton FSPA, met with the Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor. (See photo) This was following the council receiving a Speech Pathology Australia Community Contribution Award at the Association’s Annual General Meeting. The award recognises the development of a comprehensive plan as part of the council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan including implementing strategies to encourage participation and promote inclusion for individuals with communication disabilities. This was a fantastic opportunity to promote the role that speech pathologists play in supporting people across the community to Communicate with Confidence and special thanks goes to Sue Horton who took the lead in putting the council forward to be acknowledged with this award. We express our appreciation for all who were involved this year and we are already excited to be planning for further events in 2021!
