Branch News

ACT/ New South Wales

Reaching out to Student Reps in NSW and ACT The NSW and ACT Branch of Speech Pathology Australia is rethinking student engagement. The Branch, which has 24 student representatives from six universities, have welcomed five new student liaison officers. The officers, who are all SPA members working at NSW and ACT universities, will support the student representatives with on campus advocacy and events. They’ll also help the student representatives to better access SPA resources and Branch activities. Joanne Walters, Student Liaison Officer at the University of Newcastle, thinks the new role is a “fantastic idea” and is looking forward bringing students together from across the state. Vinita Raj, Student Representative from the University of Technology Sydney is also looking forward to “getting to know people” including other students and SPA members. Alice Harland, Student Representative from the University of Newcastle agreed that, “it’s good to make connections between students and Branch and to know that our voices are also heard”. Josie McIntyre, another a Student Representative from the University of Newcastle agrees and is keen to, “promote the support that we (student members) have from SPA”. Harmony Turnbull, the Student Liaison Officer from University of Technology Sydney is currently working with Branch Chair Fiona Eastley and Vice Chair Emma Arazzi to survey former student representatives. Their aim is to improve student experiences and outcomes in the future. Former student representatives are encouraged to contact the NSW and ACT Branch. Jaimie Summerfield
