Welcome to the profession (Part 2) Preparing job applications Harmony Turnbull and Brianna Tuckerman
ACT/ New south wales
Following a successful event in June 2020, the ACT/NSW Branch hosted Part 2 via Zoom continuing a show of support for imminent and recent graduates. The aim of this event was to provide advice and support on applying for speech pathology positions. It was well attended, with around 40 attendees who gave positive feedback and indicated they would like to attend more meetings like this. The event included a welcome and words of wisdom from the ACT/NSW Branch Chair, Fiona Eastley, a presentation from Jamie Williams from Community Brands, and a valuable Q&A session with experienced members Lisa Forbes, Heather Craven and Rebecca Sullivan. Josephine Deng also shared valuable information and insights as a representative of the Early Career Reference Group. Josephine provided information about how the Association supports students and new graduates as well as sharing her own learning about applying for jobs and attending interviews. Thanks also to Nate Cornish, SPA Professional Support Advisor for attending.
Macquarie University student, Brianna Tuckerman, shared her thoughts following the event. “My key takeaways from the event were to be proactive when contacting potential employers; evaluate whether you are comfortable with the potential work culture; and to advocate for supervision. This was an interesting insight as I hadn’t considered the fact that I should also be interviewing the employer about the position/ organisation. I will be implementing this in my job search to determine whether a position is the right fit for me. The volunteers were readily offering support to students, which is a real testament to our profession. I am very fortunate to have also learned about overseas employment opportunities and recommendations for networking.” A huge thanks to everyone who attended, to the speakers for sharing their knowledge, and Branch volunteers who promoted networking and discussion in breakout rooms during the event. Considering the interest in this topic from many people, we hope to run similar events in 2021 for those who weren't able to attend this one. These will be advertised through eNews and the ACT/NSW Branch Facebook page, so keep an eye out!
