Some new graduates expressed that they were unable to graduate at the expected time, owing to COVID-19 restrictions, that had led to challenges when seeking employment. Practice owners and supervisors play an important role in supporting new graduates. When a speech pathologist identifies an area or model they feel unsure about, employers and supervisors can work with the new graduate to identify what specific supports would be helpful. They can work with the new graduate to assess their personal scope of practice, identify gaps, and create a specific professional development plan, including supervision, to support them to upskill. Respondents reflected that a number of other professional skills had resulted from completing their course during the pandemic. One new graduate suggested that the rapid and constant changes to professional practice increased their adaptability in clinical situations. Another found that the focus on parent training required in telepractice enhanced their ability to support the client’s generalisation of skills. One new graduate reported reciprocal benefits between the clinical educator and themselves, as they were able to provide technical support to their clinical educator regarding telepractice, while the speech pathologist provided practice guidance. Considerations A small number of respondents indicated they needed to seek additional support and development opportunities in order to feel confident working in more diverse service delivery models.
