Simplified access to My health Record for self-regulating health professions
The Australian Digital Health Agency is responsible for The My Health Record (MHR) - a digital patient file designed to hold electronic health documents created by different health professionals. You can view a client’s health information in their shared health summary – this could include details about chronic conditions and current medicines, information summaries about significant health events as well as specialist letters, immunisation records and MBS and PBS history. The Digital Health Agency has indicated speech pathologists do not need the consent of an individual to view their record and can access an individual's record outside of a consultation, provided that access is for the purpose of providing healthcare to that person. Individuals may, however, choose to enable privacy settings to control which healthcare organisations can access their My Health Record. They can limit access to their entire record or to particular documents. More information see My Health Record for allied health professionals and for details about consent and viewing a record see View a My Health Record Until recently it has been difficult for speech pathologists to access and register for My Health Record as health care providers. However, the Agency have recently announced a simplified registration process to gain a Healthcare Provider Identifier (HPI-I)- this is the first step allied health professionals need to complete to connect with My Health record. Once a speech pathologist has an HPI-I, it is possible to access My Health Record through the National
Provider Portal, or via a clinical information system if the workplace has conformant clinical software. As part of the registration process, speech pathologists can opt-in to be listed in the Healthcare Provider Directory (HPD). This will let authorised healthcare providers find contact details and communicate with each other by sending information such as referrals and other For details about how to register for a Healthcare Provider Identifier Individual (HPI-I) and how you can access client’s records in my Health Record see SPA’s FAQ Practice Management Software, My Health Record and Secure Messaging The Digital Health Agency recently recorded a webinar: 'Digital tools to securely access and share health information for speech pathologists'. This webinar will assist members to understand digital health tools to securely access and share health information. It includes a specific walk through of the new HPI-I registration process outlined above as well as a details about My Health Record, Secure Messaging and cyber security considerations.
