Sally’s leadership has enabled international mobility and education for Australian speech pathology students, securing more than $350k in short-term mobility funding to support more than 70 students over the past five years to undertake assessable clinical placements across the Asia Pacific Region. Sally is recognised nationally and internationally as an innovative academic leader in transnational education, curriculum development and the preparation of speech pathology students for practice. Sally is an Accreditation Assessor for Speech Pathology Australia; she led the 2018 SPA Clinical Education in Australia project and was an integral member of the National Simulation in Speech Pathology Project (2014-2018). Sally’s recent her work has focused on the development of speech pathology in majority world countries and under-served communities and she volunteers on the Board of Directors of the Trinh Foundation Australia to support the development of speech therapy in Vietnam. Sally has been recognised with a prestigious award and medal from the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for her ongoing support and development of the speech therapy profession. Sally is also working in collaboration with Orient Speech Therapy, on the development of the first speech therapy curricula for China. Call for papers Are you considering submitting a proposal to present a project related to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people? SPA recognises the importance of Indigenous philosophies and research methodologies within both research and practice. The CPC, working with the SPA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee, have developed guidelines for presentations at the 2020 conference. These can be found in the instructions to authors on the conference website. We ask that you take these guidelines into account when developing your proposal. The extent to which adherence to the guidelines is demonstrated will be considered in the review process. The online submission is available at speechpathologyaustralia. org.au . We would encourage you to spread the news through your many networks, colleagues and friends, wherever they are in the world. Congratulations to Melissa Davis from Western Australia who was sitting in the "lucky seat" and won the complimentary registration to the 2020 national conference. The 2020 Conference Planning Committee (CPC) looks forward to bringing you updates about the national conference in each issue of Speak Out and through the monthly issue of Conference eNews. Keynote speakers The CPC is pleased to introduce to you the first of our two keynote speakers. Information about the presentations by the keynote speakers will be available on the conference website in the coming months. Swathi Kiran is Professor in the Department of Speech and of brain plasticity following a stroke. She has over 100 publications and her work has appeared in high impact journals across a variety of disciplines including cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging, rehabilitation, speech language pathology and bilingualism. Swathi is a fellow of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. She is the co-founder and scientific advisor for Constant Therapy, now owned by The Learning Corporation, a software platform for rehabilitation tools after brain injury. Elizabeth Usher Memorial Award recipient The CPC is pleased to announce that the SPA Board has Hearing Sciences and the Associate Dean for Research at the College for Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Boston University. Her research interests focus around lexical semantic treatment for individuals with aphasia, bilingual aphasia and neuroimaging
accepted their nomination for Associate Professor Sally Hewat to receive the Elizabeth Usher Memorial Award for 2020. Associate Professor Sally Hewat is the Head of Speech Pathology at The University of Newcastle. Her leadership roles have included Head of Discipline, Deputy Head of School (Research) and Assistant Dean Research Training. Sally’s work has been supported by
international and external funding exceeding $2M and has been recognised through five university awards; including two VC
