Swallowing Awareness Day celebrated with swallowing expert! To celebrate Speech Pathology Australia’s Swallowing Awareness Day, student-led podcast, The Up + Coming Speechies, hosted by Sienna McCormack and Hannah McKerral, were lucky enough to interview Dr Ianessa Humbert! Dr Humbert is of course a swallowing expert, researcher, professor and speech pathologist. She is also co- creator of the wonderful podcast, Down the Hatch and co-founder of STEP, swallowing training and education portal. The interview began bright and early (2:30am AEST) to meet with Dr Humbert who is based in Washington DC! Within the episode, Dr Humbert shared some of her experiences during her studies and her pathway to discovering her passion for swallowing. She also shed a light on the pressing need to overcome clinician comfortability and ensure accountability with regards to dysphagia management and complying with evidence-based practice. The episode concluded with Dr Humbert emphasising the importance of advocacy, awareness and education regarding swallowing and swallowing disorders within communities.
