Speak Out April 2021

New co-editors for JCPSLP Around the journals

Speech Pathology Australia has welcomed two new co-editors to the Journal of Clinical Practice in Speech Language Pathology. Dr Andy Smidt and Dr Katrina Blyth commenced as co-editors last month taking over from Leigha Dark who stepped in as interim editor in 2020. The Association gratefully acknowledges Leigha's significant skills and knowledge to deliver high quality editions through what was a tumultuous year. We now welcome Andy and Katrina who are passionate about knowledge translation and clinical research. Their focus will be to build-on the current JCPSLP publication and explore ways to encourage more interaction for readers, such as using live Q&A sessions with authors. Watch this space for more innovative ways of engaging with the journal's material! Andy and Katrina have a broad range of clinical, supervisory, academic and research experience across clinical practice areas. Both work at the University of Sydney where they shared an office before COVID-19. These days, Zoom is their "friend". Andy qualified in the UK and emigrated to Australia 25 years ago. Andy has worked in a range of clinical settings largely with

people with a disability. Andy completed her PhD in 2007 and has been a lecturer at the University of Sydney since 2012. Andy lectures in a number of units to both speech pathology and non speech pathology students, and supervises a number of honours and PhD students. Andy also works as a clinical supervisor for an NGO in Sydney. Andy was also recently appointed to the role of Research Consultant for Key Word Sign Australia. Katrina worked as a registered nurse prior to becoming an SLP in 2004. Her clinical and academic interests are in acute care and rehabilitation. In particular, dysphagia, voice, speech, tracheostomy and laryngectomy management. In 2011 her frustrations in finding effective rehabilitation for patients following tongue cancer surgery, developed into a PhD. Katrina’s PhD journey highlighted how routine clinical services could become published research which then enabled change in clinical practice. Her academic experiences include being an honours supervisor, examination marker, course co-ordinator, clinical educator as well as journal reviewer and researcher. Andy and Katrina welcome submissions to JCPSLP and encourage you to take a look at the 2021 planned general themes.
