whether they continue to work in the Northern Territory, Australia or further afield. The College has placed great value in the knowledge of the Northern Territory speech pathology workforce. Local speech pathologists were invited to a ‘Networking and Consultation’ some inspiring ideas about how the University’s speech pathology students can share their developing skills with the local community, whilst in turn gaining valuable learning experiences. Such ideas included providing an after-school book club, with a focus on phonological awareness and literacy and the development of social skills groups in partnership with the University’s occupational therapy, psychology and social work students. Local speech pathologists were excited at the prospect of such initiatives which would support the Northern Territory community and help to address significant gaps in local service provision. These services will be provided through the College of Health and Human evening towards the end of last year (pictured), which generated
Science’s Wellness Centre, a purpose- built facility providing multidisciplinary student-led allied health services for the local Darwin community and further afield in the Northern Territory through video link and interactive technologies. The College’s speech pathology students will also benefit from the College’s Health Immersive Virtual Education (HIVE) program, which uses new virtual reality and augmented reality tools to enhance teaching and health service provision. The dual degree undergraduate Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Speech and Language Therapy commenced in the first semester of this year, with the graduate entry Master of Speech and Language Therapy due to commence in 2021. Both programs are in the qualifying stage of accreditation with Speech Pathology Australia.
