Speak Out April 2019

Supporting early career speech pathologists The Students and New Graduate Network from the SPA WA Branch Executive Committee recently hosted a ‘Welcome to the Profession’ speed networking event for early career speech pathologists. Twenty-six student and new graduate speech pathologists attended, where they had the opportunity to meet with an energetic bunch of experienced local speech pathologists, who together possess an abundance of clinical experience and represented very diverse career journeys. Many stuck around long after the speed-networking rounds to pick the brains of the speech pathologists who had so very generously donated their time. Tips were exchanged about how to write a winning job application, what employers are looking for in a new graduate, how to get started in private practice, how to keep up-to-date with evidence-based practice once university is over, and many other pearls of wisdom! Thank you to Ria Ferris who coordinated the event and Edith Cowan University for hosting the event. It was fantastic to see such an enthusiastic new generation of speech pathologists who are about to enter the workforce. Finally, an additional award. The winner of the 2018 Future Leader in Indigenous Allied Health Award, sponsored by the Dietitians’ Association of Australia, was Edith Cowan University’s final year speech pathology student, Mitchell Walley. This award recognises the incredible contribution members make to their professions and to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and our communities.
