Born in 1899, Elinor Wray spent her childhood on the central coast of NSW. After studying in London, Miss Wray returned home in 1929; and in 1931 opened the first
hospital therapy clinic in Australia at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, located in Sydney. Wray remained an integral part of the development and advocacy of speech pathology across the country and around the world throughout her life. The Elinor Wray Award was instituted in 1981 in her honour. The award is granted for significant and outstanding contribution to the profession of speech pathology.
