Speak Out April 2018
SPOTLIGHT ON PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT
T here are a variety of processes by which you can receive 1:1 or group professional support tailored to your needs; supervision, mentoring, and peer support. All three of these activities accrue one PSR point per hour spent on this activity, whether you are providing or receiving the support. Today we are focusing on supervision. Some key differences between supervision and mentoring and peer support are that supervision: • aims to ensure clinical competence to perform tasks required by the specific work role, • is typically more frequent than mentoring or peer support. Weekly supervision is recommended for early career speech pathologists, while mentoring and peer support are typically monthly, • is paid (internally or externally). Speech Pathology Australia has developed a suite of resources to support the uptake and process of supervision. These resources include: Focus on supervision
• Position statement – The role and value of professional support. This provides further distinction between supervision and mentoring and sets recommendations regarding frequency of supervision at different levels of practice, • Supervision Standards, • Supervision FAQs, • Supervision and Clinical Support Definitions and Templates, • Supervision Register – a list of speech pathologists who provide external supervision. These resources can be found at: www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/supervision For further information about supervision, mentoring or peer support contact Meredith Prain psa@speechpathologyaustralia.org.au (Tuesdays only).
