4 Sounds Write phonics program Sounds Write provides the classroom practitioner with rigorous training in how to teach reading and spelling from the moment children begin their schooling. In addition, it also provides a highly successful intervention program for speech pathologists working at Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels of instruction. Sounds Write is highly structured, multi-sensory, incremental, cumulative, sequential, explicit and code- oriented; provides clear, easy-to-follow lesson plans and teaches conceptual understanding, factual knowledge, blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation 5 Phonemic manipulation programs Phonemic manipulation is a vital component of orthographic mapping. Students need to engage in high intensity spaced practice using exercises from programs such as the Heggerty program (https://www.heggerty. org/) and David Kilpatrick’s one-minute exercises (https://equippedforreadingsuccess.com/) to develop the skills required for independent spelling and reading of words. 6 The Writing Revolution: A Guide to Advancing Thinking Through Writing in All Subjects and Grades This text by Judith Hochman and Natalie Wexler is a very useful text for speech pathologists working with school- aged students; it contains highly structured strategies to advance students from words to sentences to short texts to extended texts. Ollie Lovell interviewed Judith for a podcast on “The Education Research Reading Room” where Judith spoke about the strategies she includes in her book. It was really helpful to listen to this before reading the book, as she provides an overview of how to use the book. http://www. ollielovell.com/errr/judithhochman/ 7 Decodable books Decodable books are a MUST for speech pathologists teaching children to read and spell. They follow a very clear scope and sequence of teaching from the initial to the final codes. Three that we use in the clinic are: • Little Learners Love Literacy https:// littlelearnersloveliteracy.com.au/ • Phonic Books http://www.phonicsaustralia.com.au/ phonicbooks • Decodable Readers Australia https://www. decodablereadersaustralia.com.au/
8 Word Q Word Q (https://www.quillsoft.ca/wordq5) is a predictive text function that will provide 5+ options to choose from at any time. The program bases its prediction of a chosen word relative to the linguistic context (e.g., if a student writes “One day there…” Word Q will provide options such as “was” or “were”). It will also consider the phonetic context; if a student writes “jiraf”, Word Q will provide “giraffe” as a more suitable orthographic representation. Word Q encourages students to use more sophisticated vocabulary instead of simplifying their lexicon due to spelling difficulties. 9 Talk for Writing Talk for Writing is an engaging teaching framework developed by Pie Corbett, and supported by Julia Strong. It is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn oral language; it enables them to imitate the language they need for a particular topic verbally. before reading and analysing it, and then writing their own version. https://www.talk4writing.co.uk/ 10 “Virtual” world of support Connect to people and to a range of online sources to find answers to questions and solutions to problems.
