9 Consistency, reliability and continuity Many of the young people and adults you work with have not experienced continuity of relationships during their journey within the criminal justice setting. Being honest about what you are able to offer, being consistent in your approach, and being reliable in your timing is essential in building a constructive relationship and ensuring engagement. 10 Resilience Working with young people and adults in the justice system frequently challenges your own views, emotions and coping skills. It is important to know your own strengths and weaknesses and to develop skills to manage challenging situations and conversations, including having access to some often very distressing information. Having good resilience skills will enable you to demonstrate great flexibility when deal with changing routines and plans. Spend time with intervention and case workers, education staff, prison officers, health teams and residential workers. Having a good understanding of their roles and their interactions and relationships with the young people and adults will assist you to tailor training packages for staff and also enable you to deliver more functional and realistic communication strategies and interventions.
