5.5 Reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment and Instruments Reprocessing is a series of validated processes carried out in a controlled manner to render a medical device that has previously been used or contaminated as fit and safe for reuse. Reprocessing may include whole devices or parts of devices. The concept of reuse introduces the risk of transmitting an infectious agent. During an outbreak, epidemic or pandemic, practices should consider using single-use medical devices as opposed to reprocessing dependent upon associated risks and costs. Reprocessing may include cleaning, disinfection, drying, disassembly, inspection, testing, packaging, sterilisation, re-sterilisation, storage and transport. Disinfecting and sterilising is not effective without adequate cleaning. If an item is not suitable for cleaning, it is not suitable for reuse. Note: Clean and store equipment as per the manufacturer’s instructions and adhere to workplace policies and procedures, government guidelines, legislation and infection control services. Cleaning removes foreign material and visible soil from a used medical device. • Soil includes blood, respiratory secretions, tissue, other biological material, dirt and debris. • Soil can interfere with the effectiveness of disinfection and sterilisation processes if not removed properly. • Remove gross soil immediately after use to enable cleaning.
